Modr Morain

Modr Morain, goddess of grief, healing, redemption and solace, protector of the weak, damaged, lost and powerless. Modr Morain takes under her arms those who have suffered losses and hardships; the sick, the dying, the widows and orphans, the broken soldiers, the abused and violated, the hungry and poor. People pray to her for guidance in their darkest times, for mercy, for healing, for comfort. She is especially revered among women.
"Modr" is the Duinmeri word for "Mother".

The stories say she was once one of nine daughters of Esseia; the moon herself. Morain was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, and it was her voice that attracted the malicious entity Duar, whom asked for her hand in marriage time and time again. Morain rejected his proposal 8 times. Before his final proposal, Duar slew all of Morain's sister, one for every rejection. When he came to her, he told her that if she rejected him a ninth time, she would join her sisters. Horrified of his action, and despairing for her sisters, Morain said that she would much rather face death than live her life with him. Upon her final rejection, Duar drowned her.
When the moon rose that night, and she learned the fate of her daughters, she wept over the first 8 victims, placing them in the sky as the 8 brightest stars. But Morain remained in the sea, and eventually rose on her own, forever changed.

There are many stories as to what happened to Duar, with every story offering more and more gruesome punishments for his crimes.

Modr Morain have a strong connection to the ocean, whales and seals are sacred to her. Some stories say that it was Morain, with her beautiful voice, who taught the whales how to sing.
Unlike many other deities, she does not desire any offerings or sacrifices, it's widely accepted that the proper way to honour her is through acts of community service and acts of kindness. The temples of Modr Morain are not so much places of worship as they are places of shelter, healing and community. The Sisterhood have a long history of serving the people of Duinmere by feeding the hungry, offering shelter for the homless, protection victims of abuse, caring for the sick and the injured, and just trying to reduce suffering in any way they can. For that they are revered throughout the country.
