Based on the death of Kandu V.
Kandu V was a female Icelandic orca who was caught in 1977 and kept at SeaWorld San Diego, California. She died in 1989 after trying to ram another female orca, Corky II. The two whales had been aggressive towards one another since they first met years ago.
Kandu charged at Corky, attempting to rake her, but ended up fracturing her jaw and severing an artery. The people in the stadium were quickly ushered out, and after a 45 minute hemorrhage, Kandu V died, all the while she swam alongside her 11-month-old calf Orkid.

Actual footage of the attack can be seen here (warning, graphic content): www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS5jo7…
And here is a photo taken shortly before her death, as she exhales blood from her blowhole: www.elastic.org/~fche/mirrors/…

This unfortunate fatal incident occurred due the unnatural social structure in which the orcas are forced to live.
The two females came from entirely different populations, Kandu being caught in Iceland and Corky being a Northern resident from Canada. In the wild, orcas only interact with other members of their families, and they have complex social structures. In captivity, unrelated whales and mixed and matched at the convenience of the park owners. Often they are moved several times during their life times, and often mothers and calves are separated to live in entirely different locations.
These artificial social structures are incredibly unstable, and often result in the more dominant animals acting aggressively and harassing the other animals at the parks. Something like this wouldn't happen in the wild.

The story of Kandu V was one of the first ones to convince me that these animals don't belong in captivity. I first heard about her when I saw the documentary A fall from freedom, but I have learned a lot more about her story since then.

Time to go through my inbox!!
I saw this when you first submitted it and I gotta say it doesn't get any easier looking at it. And the actual footage is gutwrenching~ the tragedy is deep :(
Hauntingly beautiful, love.

It definitely wasn't easy to work on either, although I did manage to keep some distance from the subject, otherwise I'm not sure how I would have been able to do it.
This story is one of those things that just keeps haunting me, lingering at the back of my head somewhere. It was one of the first things I learned about when I first found out about the whole captivity debate, and I was absolutely horrified by it. I can't imagine the pain Kandu was in, with all that blood pouring out of her, it was probably difficult to breathe... And it went on for so long, 45 agonizing minutes. And for Orkid to witness that at such a young age. It's really terrible.
There's a couple of other stories like this that I can't really get out of my head, maybe I'll draw some of them in the future. It did feel good getting this out of my mind.

Thank you!

Mmhm :( Stories like those stir the heart so much, it's amazing how beautiful yet haunting illustrations come to fruition. We could be all so much better off without tragedy, but at least we can bring more attention to it and hope to make a difference. I would definitely continue channeling your feelings, calms down the mind yeah? Like with my latest submission.
No problem~ :)
